Man, Wife
Among 1st
Med Grads
Dr. Martha Rojas Gau-thier
of Lake Charles and
Dr. Harold Joseph Gauthier
Jr. of DeRidder married
three weeks before they
entered Louisiana State Uni-versity
Medical School at
Shreveport four years ago.
Yesterday they graduated
in the first class of the
school.
He received his degree
first because the diplomas
are given out in alphabetical
order, and "H" comes be-fore
"M."
Together they will take a
three-year residency in fam-

ily practice medicine at St.
Elizabeth's Medical Center,
Dayton, Ohio, because they
feel that speciality is the
best of all medical worlds.
The wife, 24, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
J. H. Rojas of Lake Charles
and was the only woman
member of the first class.
He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Gauithier of
DeRidder and is 26.
"We didn't want to give
up any area of medicine,'
he said.
"We liked every speciali-ty,"
she added.
They d o n ' t know yet
whether they will stay in
Ohio, or come back to
Louisiana, but think they'd
like to work in a city the
size of Shreveport.
Dr. Martha Gauthier has
w a n t e d to be doctor
"every since I was five
years old." while her hus-band
decided in junior high
school to become a physi-cian.
"I wanted to be a
scientist and work in a
humanistic field. Medicine
is a perfect combination.
What was difficult about
medical school?
He: "The enormity of it —
t h e r e was so much to
learn."
She: "You realize after
one year there is so much to
learn You have to be a
student the rest of your
life."
Asked if she had felt
preiudice as a woman, she
said only among the resi
dents at Confederate Memo-rial
Medical Center, "I felt
a note of prejudice ...
Her husband interrupted,
disagreed and said, "I think
thev just weren't used to:
medical students, not be-)
cause she was a woman!
In the Gauthier household
if anyone asks for a doctor
there will be two.
