The Crane Lifting a 29-ton steam boiler
reared back yesterday dropping the
boiler. The boiler is one of two going
into place in the "D" building, the
power plant for the $30 million Louisia-na

Boiler Falls
From Crane
At Site Here
A 29-ton steam boiler proved
too heavy for the crane swing-ing
it into place on the construc-tion
site of Louisiana State
University Medical School in
S h r e v e p o r t and fell on the
ground floor slab of the "D"
Building yesterday afternoon,
according to Elmer Hammock,
project engineer.
No one was i n j u r e d and
estimate of damage had not
been made yesterday.
The boiler crumpled a con-crete
support column, steel form
supports and boards which had
been put in to hold concrete on
the next floor of the building.
The "D" building is the facility
which will house the power
plant for the $30 million school
being c o n s t r u c t e d next to
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center on Kings Highway.
The s u p p o r t beams them-selves
"look good," Hammock
said. There is the possibility
that the boiler was damaged, he
said.
"There was too much weight
for the situation," the project
engineer said.
The crane was lifting the
boiler over a 13-foot support
beam when the crane "reared
back" and the boiler "fell on the
around floor slab of the 'D'
building," Hammock explained.
"It fell only 10 or 12 feet," he
said.
Hammock emphasized t h a t
the extent of damage will not be
known until an inspection is
made.
The accident will not delay
construction of the m e d i c a 1
school, he added.
The boiler was one of two
wh;ch had been unloaded from a
train on St. Vincent's Avenue
and taken to the construction
site. The boiler weighed 58.000
nounds: was 24-f eetlong; 13-feet
high, and 11-feet wide.
