BATON ROUGE — A histo-ry-
making building contract
was signed here Friday morn-ing
for the construction of the
$24 million Louisiana State
University School of Medicine
in Shreveport.
S i g n i n g the construction
contract with LSU President
John A. Hunter was A. L.
Jensen of H. A. Lott construc-tion
firm in Houston, Tex., the
lowest of nine bidders. The
signing took place in Presi-dent
Hunter's office at 11 a.m.
Representing the Shreveport
School of Medicine at the
signing was Dr. Edgar Hull,
dean of the School. Whitney L.
Girouard Jr., Baton Rouge
district engineer with the U.S.
Department of Health, Educa-tion
and Welfare, represented
HEW, the f e d e r a l agency
providing some $20 million in
funds for the building project.
The entire project will cost
$30.5 million, with the state
providing some $10 million.
THE NEW CONSTRUC-tion
contract is the largest
in the University's history.
Construction of five new
b u i l d i n g s adjoining the
Confederate Memorial Medi-cal
Center are included in the
c o n t r a c t , which will total
some half million square feet
of floor space.
The buildings will all be
air-conditioned and fire-resis-tant
masonry and steel con-struction.
The largest struc-ture
in the complex will be an
administrative and research
building some 11 stories high
connecting t h e Confederate
Memorial Medical Center at
eight floor levels. Other build-ings
include a five-story com-prehensive
care and clinical
teaching facility, a four-story
library building, with a capac-ity
for 156,000 yolumes and a
250-seat auditorium, a one-sto-
