Shreveport insurance execu-tive
Harold K. Quinn yesterday,
545 Lloyd Lane, was named by
Gov. Edwin W. Edwards as
chairman of the new Confeder-ate
Memorial Medical Center
board.
He replaces T. B. Lanford,
who has held the post since 1956.
The governor also named 11
other board members, but left
one position vacant. The mem-bers
include three reappoint-ments,
three blacks and one
woman. Among those going off
the board is Tony A. Pernici,
vice chairman.
The three blacks named are
R a l p h R. Hall, 116 Piano,
counselor for men at Southern
University at Shreveport; the
Rev. Abraham E. Davis, paster
of St. Paul United Methodist
Church, and Wilbur T. Purvis of
Mansfield.
Lone Woman Named
The lone woman named is
Anna Laurie Wilder of Homer.
She replaces long-time member
Dr. S. A. Tatum.
Others r e n a m e d are Dr.
James W. Tucker, 4710 Gilbert
Drive, Shreveport; Dr. Jackie
D. Huckaby of Coushatta and
Jack Clayton of Haughton, who
will be "retained indefinitely,"
with no explanation by the
governor as to what the phrase
means.
Other new members are Dr.
J. Dudley Talbot, 2748 Virginia
Ave., Dr. W. J. Hill Jr., 6908
East Ridge Drive, Dr. Bernard
M. K a l s t o n e , 6005 Southern
Ave., all of Shreveport, and
Andre Joyce of Minden.
There is one spot yet to be
filled, that of Dr. Aaron E.
Ussery of Arcadia, who resigned
from the board some time ago.
This the Bienville Parish ap-pointment.
The other old board members
and their replacements follow:
T. A. Pernici, replaced by Tal-bot;
Dr. Andrew J. Mullen,
replaced by Hill; Gen. John S.
Hardy, replaced by Kalstone;
Dr. Charles L. Black, replaced
by the Rev. Mr. Davis; W. H.
Thompson of Minden, replaced
by Joyce; Roger H Silver of
Mansfield, replaced by Purvis
Hall took the spot formerly held
by Dr. George J. Woolhandler,
who died last year.
There was no official com-ment
as to whether Dr. Edgar
Galloway, hospital director, will
remain in that post or be asked
to resign. A spokesman for the
governor said Edwards will not
recommend anyone to succeed
Galloway if the new board does
ask him to resign, meaning the
board would make the appoint-ment.
Quinn would not comment as
to whether the board will keep
Galloway or not.
"I don't know what changes in
personnel we will take," he
said. "We haven't met.
Galloway, 78, has been direc-tor
of Co n f e d e r a t e and its
predecessor since 1940, except
for short periods of time. He has
refused to talk about whether he
plans to resign or stay, saying
"I can't comment on what
might happen in the future."
Speculation is that he will stay,
if asked to.
Dr. Charles Black, assistant
dean of LSU Medical School at
Shreveport, who was not reap-pointed
to his position on the
board, has been mentioned as a
possible successor to Galloway,
but because of his position with
the medical school, it is doubtful
that he could serve.
Others suggested as possible
heads for the institution are Dr.
Marion Hargrove, also an as-sistant
dean at the medical
school and head of the Depart-ment
of Medicine at Confedrate,
and Dr. Ike Muslow, a former
head of the Department of
Medicine at Confederate.
In an interview, Quinn said,
"The primary objective of the
board is to insist that the level
of patient care be very, very
high and, too, we want to be
sure we are responsive to the
needs of the community."
The new board chairman said
"Confederate can be one of the
greatest hospitals in the world
because of the medical school.'
He also complimented the
visiting staff — composed most-ly
of area doctors in private
practice — saying, "Some of the
finest minds in medicine are on
the visiting staff."
