Work a Joy to Medical Photographer
By ANN DKMENT
Journal Medical Writer
In December 1948
Gordon Maxey deciided to
pursue the field of medical
photography -- he's come
a long way.
Maxey, known as one of
the most helpful and pro-fessional
people on staff at
Confederate Memorial
Medical Center, has de-signed
and developed a de-partment
of medical
photography unlike any
other program It has
worked so well, assisting
in all areas of hospital
service, that according to
Maxey, "It is as much a
challenge today than it
was when we first start."
It is obvious that Max-ey
's daily tasks are really
not chores to him but
pleasures However the
work, he performs has
made him a valuable asset
to administrative and
medical personnel at the
hospital.
ACCORDING to Maxey,
"Medical photography is
essentially factual. Its
primary function is to put
on permanent record the
salient visible features of
the case without em-bellishment,
exaggeration,
distortion, deliberate ob-literation
of detail or re-course
to any artistic or
spectacular effects. It em-braces
the whole field of
photography and includes
a few methods or techni-ques
which are solely
medical. Medical photo-

graphs are useless unless
they are properly
classified and recorded in
detail."
In 1948 Maxey worked
one day a week at the
hospital at the request of
Dr. Paul D. Abramson, a
close friend. "It is a
challenging field., always
new, always rewarding,"
he said.
The medical photo-graphy
and illustration de-partment
are located
together on the basement
level of the hospital. There
are medical iJlustra-tionists
who assist in vis-ual
works.
Maxey's responsibilities
include taking pictures of
employes, copying X-rays
for physicians, filming

operations and surgical

patients before,
during and after treatment
or surgery. He produces
color slides, motion pic-ture
film, black and white
prints as well as portraits
for hospital employes.
ONE MEMORABLE
event for Maxey was the
filming of the first open
heart surgery in the City
of Shreveport. He said on
almost every surgical
technique a film has been
made. "We have made
hundreds of films here at
Confederate."
The dedication of
Gordon Maxey is unique,
according to hospital staf-fers.
"He is a delight and
a sparkle in this place,"
said one employe.
