Community Physician and Med School
DR. IKE MUSLOW
Dean, School of Medicine in Shreveport
Dedication of the new Medical School
building in October represents another step in
establishing Shreveport as a medical center
capable of providing medical education and
care second to none. Was it a spur of the mo-ment
decision to build the school or was it a
natural evolutionary process in the history of
Shreveport medicine?
Long before the legislative act authorizing
the establishment of the Medical School, the
Shreveport physicians had established our ci-ty
as a medical patient referral center for the
Ark-La-Tex area. Confederate, which will
celebrate its 100th year anniversary in 1976,
will have trained over 1,400 physicians during
its 100 years' existence. Who was responsible
for the education and supervision of these in-terns
and residents? With the help of a few
full-time Confederate physicians, the com-munity
physicians had the responsibility for
the postdoctoral training programs. Countless
hours were given to teaching and care of the
sick, without thought of monetary compensa-tion.
This same community physician, not
satisfied with teaching only the graduate
physician, felt it was time to be involved with
undergraduate education. There was born the
idea of a medical school in Shreveport —
simply an evolutionary process in the history
of Shreveport medicine.
Dr. Edgar Hull long recognized the poten-tial
of the Shreveport medical community.
Through his guidance and encouragement,
the Shreveport physicians took it upon
themselves to establish this school. It is
estimated that to duplicate their efforts in the
initial planning, alone, would have required
between $30,000 - $40,000.
After years of effort, the school is here
with a highly qualified full-time faculty. The
role of the community physician is not ended.
He remains an active member of the faculty
and continues to teach. His teaching arena
must enlarge to include the community
hospital for these hospitals will also become
teaching centers for medical students and re-sidents.
Shreveport and the surrounding com-munities
have every right to be proud of their
physicians. Their efforts have certainly con-tributed
in a valuable sense to the reality of
Shreveport as a "City on the Grow."
