Roemer requests VA Med Center
name change to honor Brooks
Journal Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Buddy
Roemer has asked Congress to name
the Shreveport Veterans Adminis-tration
Medical Center in honor of the
late T. Overton Brooks.
Brooks was instrumental in win-ning
approval for the VA facility
when he served as 4th District con-gressman
for more than 20 years,
from 1937 until his death in 1961.
"I deeply believe that the tribute I
have proposed here today is but slight
recompense for the debt this country
owes this fine statesman," Roemer
told his colleagues on the House floor.
"It is a fitting and proper memorial to
his legacy of service that we name
and dedicate this medical center as
the T. Overton Brooks Veterans Ad-ministration
Medical Center."
The facility, at 510 E. Stoner Ave.,
is a general medical and surgical
hospital serving some 9,600 in-pa-tients
and 75,000 out-patients each
year. It is fully affiliated with the
LSU School of Medicine.
Prior to his service in Congress,
Brooks practiced law in Shreveport
after graduating from LSU Law
School in 1923. He served as U.S.
Commissioner from 1925 to 1935.
During World War I, he served over-seas
as an enlisted man with the Sixth
Field Artillery in the First Division. T. Overton Brooks
