New Nursing
Program Wins
Praise Here
Northwestern S c h o o l of
Nursing's new associate de-gree
program looks like it
may be one answer to filling
the local area with badly-needed
hospital nurses.
Dr. B. M. Kalstone, chair-man
of the nursing service
and education committee of
Confederate Memorial! Medi-cal
Center's Board of Direc-tors,
Tuesday night told the
board that 125 "top" students
had been selected for the first
c 1 a s s, which began this
month.
THESE 125 students, he
said, were selected from 200
applicants to the program.
"This two-year program," he
a d d e d , "is going to add
considerably to alleviating the
nursing shortage and they'll
be h o s p i t a l nurses, not
chiefs."
Dr. Edgar Galloway, CMMC
d i r e c t o r , agreed with Dr.
K a l s t o n e , saying that the
"two-year program was re-es-tablished
to reinstate the old
idea of good, bed-side patient
care."
CMMC board m e m b e r s
were told that another pro-gram
hopefully will be added
to the Nursing School curricu-lum
soon whereby practical
nurses can become registered
nurses without having to take
the entire study course.
BOARD MEMBER Ralph
Hall noted that more blacks
may be entering the nursing
field and pointed out that the
nursing school has an excel-lent
financial aid program.
Hall also noted that South-ern
University and CMMC are
participating in an exchange
program 'connected with the
nurses' training.
