$20.5 Million
U.S. Funds Expected
For Medical School
By Margaret Martin
Times Medical Writer
Funding of $20.5 million federal
matching funds for the Louisiana
State University Medical School
at Shreveport is expected this
month or next month, Dr.
Marion D. Hargrove Jr., assist-ant
dean of the school told the
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center board of directors last
night.
The $20.5 million in federal
matching funds for the school
was approved in December by
the federal agency but not
actually funded.
The National Advisory Council
on Education for Health Profes-sions,
part of the Public Health
Services,' gave the nod on the
project, but the secretary of
health, education and welfare
has to approve the funds.
The complex will be a $30.5
million building, with $10 million
coming from the state. It will be
constructed on the grounds of
Confederate.
Dr. Hargrove mentioned the
funding during a discussion on
the change in a lease agreement
between the board and LSU.
Dr. George Woolhandler, chair-man
of Confederate's Building
and Grounds Committee, said the
plans had been changed, moving
LSU's outpatient clinic and fami-ly
center from a site near the
Linwood side of the hospital to the
front of the new medical school
building.
He said the school also needs
additional ground for another
small building. He said Confeder-ate
will have an outpatient clinic
on the Linwood site.
He said the lease needs to be
drawn up again, giving Confeder-ate
back the ground originally
leased by the school, and giving
the school the additional land it
needs.
Dr. Hargrove, sitting in at the
meeting for Dean Dr. Edgar Hull
who is in Spain, urged the board
to change the lease as soon as
possible.
"We expect to be funded this
month or next month and we
won't be funded, if the lease is
not in order," he added.
Spring Groundbreaking
Dr. Hargrove said if the funds
are approved by August, the
school would be ready to take
bids in January and ground-breaking
would take place in the
spring.
The application for funds was
submitted last July to the Health
Professional Education Assist-ance
Program, Division of Man-power,
part of the public health
law.
This is the schools' second try
for the federal funds. The first
request was rejected by the
council in 1968.
The complex's 12-story basic
science and clinical building will
be constructed between the medi-cal
center and the Confederate
Nursing School facility, with the
outpatient clinic in front of the
building.
According to Dr. Edgar Hull,
dean of the school, the facility
will occupy about 400,000 square
feet. It will have a nine-floor
core unit and a four-floor
$36,000-s q u a r e foot outpatient
clinic.
The entire school will be
designed to adjoin Confederate
and there will be a covered
walkway connecting the hospi-tal's
school of nursing.
Contemporary in design, the
building will be of concrete and
steel. It will include laboratories
for sciences including biochemis-try,
administrative classrooms
and other facilities.
Also included will be a sep-arate
wing for a library and
another wing for an auditorium.
In September, there will be 32
sophomores and 32 freshmen
attending the school. Classes are
held at the Veterans Administra-tion
Hospital, but other facilities
which will be in use this fall are
Confederate, the Linwood Apart-ment
Complex and the Stonewall
Missile Site.
