He'll Accept Post Here
Dr. Clifford G. Grulee Jr.,
dean of the U n i v e r s i t y of
Cincinnati (Ohio) College of
Medicine, told The Shreveport
Times yesterday he plans to
accept an offer to become dean
of the LSU School of Medicine
at Shreveport.
Dr. William H. Stewart of
New Orleans, chancellor of the
LSU Medical Center, today will
recommend to the LSU board of
supervisors that G r u l e e be
hired.
It is subject to ratification by
the board at its Dec. 1 meeting
at LSU in New Orleans.
Grulee, 60, would begin his
duties in Shreveport next year,
replacing Dr. Edgar Hull, who
will retire from university serv-ice
effective June 30.
Earlier, Stewart said that
Grulee had been offered an
annual salary of $44,000 if he
would take the job.
In a telephone interview,
Grulee said that he felt it
challenging and exciting that
the post, at a new and develop-ing
school is available, and
"seems to want me."
Useful Experiences
"I think the experiences I
have had could be useful to such
an institution," the Cincinnati
dean said.
He h as no special plans for
the local school at present, he
added.
". . . . I am glad I have two
or three months to assume
responsibility to look in and
learn about the Ark-La-Tex
a r e a , Shreveport's character
and how the medical school is
run," he said.
Grulee, a pediatrician, served
on the faculty of the Tulane
Medical School in New Orleans
for 11 years, becoming associate
dean before assuming the dean-ship
at Cincinnati in 1963.
His wife is a native of
Shreveport.
He would join the faculty of
the LSU School of Medicine as a
tenured full professor of pedia-trics,
and as dean would be
responsible to the chancellor of
the LSU Medical Center for all
activities of the LSU School of
Medicine in Shreveport.
Stewart said of Grulee's re-commendation
that he is "the
unanimous choice of a search
committee of seven senior facul-ty
members of the school of
medicine, after having given
consideration to nearly 150 po-tential
deanship candidates.
"This recommendation also
bears the a p p r o v a l of the
general faculty of the school, as
well as the student body, and
the medical community of the
Shreveport area."
To Graduate 31
The local school now has 149
students in its four classes and
will graduate its first class of 31
physicians at commencement
ceremonies May 26.
Now housed in several tempo-rary
locations in Shreveport, the
school's permanent facilities are
being constructed adjacent to
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center, the teaching hospital.
Grulee holds the bachelor's
degree from Williams College,
Williamstown, Mass., and com-pleted
his medical school stud-ies

and St. Luke's Hospital, Chica-go.
He completed postgraduate
medical training in pathology
and pediatrics at Boston Child-ren's
Hospital and the Universi-ty
of Minnesota. He served as a
U.S. Army medical officer in
World War II.
2 Years in Pediatrics
He s pent two years in the
Department of Pediatrics, Uni-v
e r s i t y of Texas Medical
Branch, Galveston, until he
went to Tulane in-1949.
He is certified by the Ameri-can

He holds membership in nu-merous
organizations including
the American Academy of Pe-diatrics,

and Omicron Delta Kappa.
