Bids on Medical School Building Due June 17
T. A. Pernici
By Margaret Martin
Times Medical Writer
The $30.5 million Louisiana
State University Medical School
at Shreveport Building will be
submitted for bids June 17, with
opening of the bids 60 days
later, Dean Edgar Hull told the
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center Board of Directors last
night.
If bids come w i t h i n the
budget, "we anticipate construc-tion
will begin in early Septem-ber
very quickly after the bids
are awarded," the dean said.
It will be completed in a
minimum of three years, he
said, "meaning late 1974."
Hull also told the board that
bids will be advertised "about
the same t i m e " f or the
$1,350,000 outpatient facility at
Confedreate. Bids will be taken
for that facility "ahead of the
medical school," and "we hope
the outpatient addition will be
nearing completion about this
time next year."
In other major action last
night, the board elected T. A.
Pernici, Shreveport business-man,
vice chairman of the
board. Pernici, a board member
for 12 years, replaces Dr. Jacob
Segura of Mansfield. Segura
resigned over a year ago and
the board had not elected a vice
chairman until last night.
Pernici presided in the place
of Chairman T. B. Lanford who
is in Europe.
Pernici is secretary-treasurer
of Tri-State Wholesale Produce
Co., and is also a member of
East Ridge Country Club, the
Petroleum Club and the Knights
of Columbus.
The $30.5 m i l l i o n medical
school will be constructed on the
grounds of Confederate. It will
encompass five buildings to be
constructed simultaneously.
The largest building, which
will rise 120 feet, will be joined
to CMMC at eight floor levels.
The five structures are.
1. An 11-story basic science,
administrative a n d research
building.
2. A five-story comprehensive
care and clinical teaching facili-ty.
3
. A four-story library
building housing 156,000 volumes
and with space for 329 readers
as well as a 250-seat auditorium.
4. A mechanical, engineering
and power plant buildnig.
5. A one-story radio isotope
and volatile storage building.
The three-story outpatient fa-cility
at Confederate will be
erected adjacent to the present
outpatient wing. The ground
floor will contain the record
library. The walk-in clinic will
be on the first floor and the
medical and medical specialty
clinics will be on the second
floor, while the surgery, urology
and otorhinolaryngology clinics
will be on the third floor. It will
be air-conditioned.
