Groundbreaking Ceremonies—
McKeithen to Speak
At Med School Rites
9-8-71
Gov. John J. McKeithen will
be principal at groundbreak-ing
ceremonies T h u r s d a y ,
Sept. 16, for the new Louisia-na
State University School of
Medicine in Shreveport.
The event will be held at 4
p.m. at the construction site,
on the g r o u n d s of the
Confederate Memorial Medi-cal
Center, near the geograph-ic
heart of Shreveport.
CONSTRUCTION OF t h e
$24 million complex of five
buildings will reauire approxi-mately
three ana o n e -h a 1 f
years.
Special guests for the event
will include members of the
Louisiana congressional dele-gation,
as well as members of
the S t a t e Legislature, the
Board of Supervisors of the
LSU System, plus university
system officers and campus
administrators.
The LSU School of Medicine
in Shreveport, one of six
professional schools of the
LSU M e d i c a l Center, was
opened in 1969 in temporary
facilities leased by the univer-sity
at the Shreveport Veter-ans
Administration Hospital,
and now has more than 100
students in the first three
years of the medical curricu-lum,
said Dr. William H.
S t e w a r t , chancellor of the
medical center.
MASTEROF ceremonies
for the event will be Dr.
E d g a r Hull, dean of the
School of Medicine in Shreve-port
and a charter member of
the LSU m e d i c a l faculty,
having served in the faculty of
the LSU School of Medicine in
New Orleans since its incep-tion
in 1931.
The new medical complex
will be constructed by H. A.
Lott and Co., of Houston,
Tex., the l o w e s t of nine
bidders on the job, and work
will begin shortly after the
ground - breaking ceremony,
Dr. Stewart pointed out.
Upon completion, the new
building complex will accom-modate
upwards of 400 medi-cal
students, and others who
will be in residency training,
Dr. Stewart said.
