Establishment of a $250,000
Regional Center for Communi-cations
D i s o r d e r s was an-nounced
at a press conference
yesterday by state Sen. Donald
W. Williamson and Lester C.
Haas, president of the Caddo
Foundation for Exceptional
Children.
Purpose of the center is for
e v a l u a t i o n and therapeutic
treatment of children and adults
with hearing or speech disor-ders.
It will also be used as a
training facility for resident
doctors and college students and
will serve as a research facility.
The center will be housed in a
renovated Linwood Apartment
complex b u i l d i n g owned by
Louisiana State University Med-ical
School at Shreveport, and
will be operated by the Caddo
Foundation.
Construction, alterations and
additions to the apartment will
begin soon, but officials predict
that operations can begin within
a month in temporary quarters
made available in the Northwest
Louisiana Rehabilitation Center.
The center is the result of
three years of research by the
Junior League of Shreveport
and the Caddo Foundation.
It will serve the Ark-La-Tex
area providing speech disorder
evaluation and therapy, hearing
evaluation and therapy, lip
reading instruction, psychome-tric
therapy and hearing aid
consultation. A parent-infant
guidance service will be includ-ed
for children too young to
enter the deaf-oral program in
the school system.
The center's staff will include
an audiologist, speech patholo-gist,
a teacher of the deaf and a
psychologist trained to work
with children whose hearing is
impaired.
The $250,000 required for the
construction, equipping and ini-tial
operation has been -rovided
by the Junior League, the U.S.
Department of Health, Educa-tion
and Welfare through the
Division of Vocational Rehabili-tation,
the State Department of
Education; the Shreveport-Bos-sier
Foundation and the Caddo
Foundation for Exceptional
Children.
Fees, except for testing school
children, will be based on the
individual's ability to pay. Con-|
tractual arrangements will be
made with various agencies in
the area for testing services.
