Medical Society Will Present
Daylong Postgraduate Course
The Shreveport Medical Society
will present a daylong postgrad-uate
medical course featuring
heads of departments from Tu-lane
University School of Medi-cine
Wednesday at Confederate
Memorial Medical Center.
The course, acceptable for
seven accredited hours by the
American Academy of General
Practice, is entitled Tulane Day
and will have no registration fee.
Some 200 area physicians are ex-pected
to attend.
Speaking at a dinner meeting
the same evening will be Dr.
Charles C. Sprague. dean of the
Tulane School of Medicine. The
dinner at 7:30 p.m. in the Shreve-port
Club will be held at the
November meeting of the society.
The Tulane Medical Alumni will
be hosts to the group at a fel-lowship
hour at 6:30 p.m.
Registration for the course will
begin at 8 a.m. in the Confed-erate
Memorial auditorium with
the first sessions starting at 8:30.
The sessions will break from 12
to 1 p.m. for lunch in the hospi-tal
cafeteria, and run from 1 to 5
p.m. in the afternoon.
Speaking will be Dr. George
E. Burch, professor and chair-man
of the Tulane Department of
Medicine; Dr. Oscar O. Creech
Jr., professor and chairman of
the department of surgery; Dr.
Ralph V. Platou, professor and
chairman of the Department of
Pediatrics: Dr. Jorgen U. Schle-gel,
professor and head of the
Unit of Urology of the depart-ment
of Surgery; Dr. James W.
Sweeney, professor of computer
medicine and director of the bio-medical
and laboratory computer
centers at Tulane: Dr. Walter
G. Unglaub, associate dean and
director of graduate medicine;
and Dr. Philip J. Krupp Jr., as-sociate
professor of clinical ob-stetrics
and gynecology.
BACKGROUNDS TOLD
Dr. Sprague is a nationally
recognized leader in the field of
hematology, the medical specialty
concerned with diseases of the
blood and blood-forming organs,
and established the Tulane re-search
laboratory in hematology
in 1952. He served as director
until his appointment as dean. He
served as Commonwealth Re-search
Fellow in hematology at
Washington University and Ox-ford
University in England, and
serves as chairman of a special
cancer chemotherapy g r o u p
which evaluates new drugs and
chemicals in the treatment off
cancer. He is the author of 20
scientific papers.
Dr. Unglaub is consultant in
the nutrition section of the Office
of International Research of the
National Institute of Health, as
well as consultant and member
of a number of national and inter-national
organizations concerned
with nutrition. He is also home
coordinator of the Tulane-Colum-bia
Project in Medical Education.
Dr. Burch was consultant last
year at the NASA Manned Space-craft
Center in Houston, the au-thor
of numerous papers and a
member of a number of major

scientific organizations, many of
which he serves in official capac-ities.
He is the recipient of a
number of awards and honors in-cluding
the Susan and Theodore
Cummings Award for participa-tion
in the First International
Circuit Course in Cardiology
in 1961.
Dr. Creech is the author of 123
scientific papers and the recip-ient
of a number of awards for
his research and work in heart
surgery. He has been chairman
of the department of surgery at,
Tulane since 1956.
Dr. Platou is the author of 68
major scientific works and is
president emeritus of the Ameri-can
Board of Pediatrics. He is
consultant to the Surgeon General
of the U.S. Army and a member
of the Fulbright Committee for
Medical and Biological Sciences
in addition to numerous other
professional memberships.
Dr. Schlegel is a graduate of
the University of Copenhagen
where he received the Gold
Medal and first prize for a
thesis in experimental medicine.
He was appointed chairman of
the unit of urology at Tulane in
1959. He has written 92 scientific
papers and is a diplomate of the
American Board of Urology.
Dr. Sweeney is also the author
of numerous articles on elec-tronic
data processing and allied
methodology and holds a BS and
MS degree from Georgia Insti-tute
of Techonology and a PhD
from Massachusetts Institute of
Technology.
Dr. Krupp is a diplomate of
the American Board of Obstet-rics
and Gynecology as well as
a Fellow of the college. He is
also a Fellow of the Central As-sociation
of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists, the Southeastern
Surgical Congress and the Ameri-can
College of Surgeons.
Local chairman for Tulane
Day is Dr. Marion D. Hargrove
Jr. More than 100 local practic-ing
physicians are graduates of
Tulane U n i v e r s i t y Medical
School.
