March of Dimes Reveals
Goal of $45,000 for Area
A goal of $45,000 was an-nounced
here last night for a
campaign in January by the
Northwest Louisiana Chapter of
the National Foundation, March
of Dimes (MOD).
Jan. 1 was announced as the
official opening date of the LSU
Medical School, Birth Defect
Center by Ray A. Barlow,
chairman of the local chapter.
He said the center is now
operating on a limited basis.
Leo C. Burns is campaign
director of the MOD drive and
Edwin C. Harbuck is co-direc-tor.
Barlow said the Caddo-Bos-sier
Chapter merged with those
of Webster, Red River and
Bienville parishes to form the
Northwest Louisiana Chapter.
Michael Poindexter, 8-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C.
Poindexter of 240 Wedgewood,
was introduced as the local
"Poster Child of 1971."
"The National MOD Founda-tion
hopes, through prevention,
to give to every American child
his birthright of a whole mind
in a whole body," Maj. Gen.
Earl G. Bergquist of Washing-ton,
D.C., said at the kickoff
meeting. He is a consultant to
the national organization.
Gen. Bergquist said education
on the danger of rubella (Ger-man
measles) and vaccination
of all children between six and
12 is the National Foundation's
goal.
Dr. Sue Chambers said the
LSU Birth Defect Center will
offer diagnostic aid to parents.
She is a pediatrician and the
associate of Dr. Richard Jub-erg,
director of the defect
center and a geneticicist at LSU
School of Medicine-Shreveport.
"Chromosome cultures will
be studied at the center and
this is a unique service not
offered in this area before," Dr.
Chambers said.
A beauty pageant with pro-ceeds
to benefit the MOD will
be held here Feb. 20 by the
local chapter of the National
Hairdressers and Cosmetolo-gists
A s s o c i a t i o n . Gene
Knowles, president, and Bobbie
McInnis, vice president, an-nounced
the pageant.
Sponsors who Wish to enter
contestants 17 to 21 years old
may contact the MOD office at
3331 Youree Drive.
