To Visit Med
School Here
Dr. Thomas Jones, president
of the U n i v e r s i t y of South
Carolina, Columbia, and a con-t
i n g e n t about 40 will visit
Louisiana State University Med-ical
School at Shreveport July
29 and 30, Dr. George Meneely,
associate dean of the school,
said yesterday.
University of South Carolina
officials are interested in start-ing
a medical school, Meneely
said, and hope to have the
cooperation of the V e t e r a n s
Administration in the endeavor,
"in a set up similar to ours," he j
said.
LSU Medical School's affili-ation
with the local Veterans
Administration Hospital as a
Dean's Committee Hospital has
" a t t r a c t e d a considerable
amount of attention," Meneely
said.
He said although other VA
hospitals have cooperated with
m e d i c a l schools in various
ways, "This is the first school
that actually started in a VA
Hospital."
The permanent affiliation in
1967 enabled the medical school
to reach full-scale operational
status "on a much faster basis
that would have been possible,"
Dr. Edgar Hull, dean of the
m e d i c a l school, said in an
earlier interview.
The affiliation means that the
medical school has use of all
hospital facilities and all VA
staff p e r s o n n e l engaged in
teaching or research become
members of the medical school
faculty.
The school first opened for
classes in the hospital two years
ago in six r e n o v a t e d ward
kitchens and faculty members
set up research laboratories at
the school.
Accompanying T h o m a s to
Shreveport will be Dr. Leory
Lamm and Dr. Oliver Harris,
both of Washington, D.C. Lamm
is medical director for Region 2
of the VA which i n c l u d e s
Columbia, and Harris is medical
director for Region 4, which
includes Shreveport.
Also expected to make the
trip is T. Easton Marchant,
chairman of the University of
South Carolina board, state and
federal legislators and members
of the press.
Among those representing
LSU and the local VA Hospital
will be Dr. William Stewart of
New Orleans, chancellor of the
medical center, and Louis Fra-zier,
director of the Shreveport
VA Hospital. Also expected to
be present is LSU President Dr.
John Hunter.
