Baby Doe's
mother still
being sought
By MARY DURUSAU
Journal Staff Writer
After a promising lead fell through
this morning, sheriff's investigators
continued their search for the mother of
a baby boy found abandoned Tuesday.
By late Wednesday, sheriff's in-vestigators
said they believed they had
tentatively identified the mother of the
baby found at an East Ridge Country
Club area home.
However, late this morning, the in-vestigator
said the woman who was
believed to have been the baby's mother
had been ruled out.
Authorities have described their
search for the mother as "intense."
"We want to find her (the mother) for
a number of reasons — including her
own safety and health," one in-vestigator
said.
Meanwhile the list of people asking to
adopt the raven-haired "Mardi Gras"
baby found Tuesday continues to grow,
sheriff's investigators said.
The boy, described by doctors as in
"excellent" physical shape, is expected
to be discharged from LSU Hospital
today. Officials from the Child Protec-tion
Agency gained custody of the child
from a juvenile court judge and a foster
home for the baby has been selected.
But officials have not said what im-pact
locating the child's mother will
have on the baby's placement.
Child Protection Agency officials had
said that "abandonment" papers would
be filed on the child if the parents did
not come forward to claim the baby in
four months. After that four-month pe-riod,
the baby would be "cleared" for
legal adoption.
"That's assuming we don't find the
parents or if we do find them they want
to give the baby up for adoption," the
Child Protection Agency spokesman
said.
Following widespread media reports
about the baby, the sheriff's department
has been beseiged with requests to
adopt the baby. Sgt. Sherrie Carter, in
charge of the investigation to locate the
mother, said she received between 25
and 30 calls Wednesday morning.
