Dean Named
Dr. Perry G. Rigby has been named dean
of the LSUS Medical
Center's School of Medi-cine.
Announcement of
the appointment was
made by Dr. Allen A.
Copping, chancellor of
the LSU Medical Center,
following ratification by
the LSU board of super-visors
at a meeting in
Baton Rouge.
Dr. Rigby, a native of
East Liverpool, Ohio,
and a former dean of the _ Rigby
University of Nebraska School of Medicine
at Omaha, joined the medical center facul-ty
in 1978 with the academic rank of
professor of medicine. He has served as
acting dean since September, when Dr. Ike
Muslow, then dean, was elevated to post of
vice-chancellor for Shreveport affairs of
the medical center.
Honors achieved by Dr. Rigby include
Markel Scholar in Academic Medicine,
1966, and memberships in the Society of
Sigma Xi, 1965, and Alpha Omega Alpha,
national honor medical society, 1968. He is
the author or co-author of more than 65
scientific publications in his field of spe-cialty,
hematology.
Workshop for Nurses
A four-hour workshop, "Instant Leader-ship:
Strategies for Humanistic Approach,"
will be presented by Northwestern State
University, College of Nursing, Division of
Continuing Education for Registered
Nurses, on Thursday, Feb. 11, 8 a.m. to 12
noon, in the Schumpert Medical Center
auditorium. Participants will receive .4
CEUs of credit through the university.
Guest speaker will be Sylvia Rayfield,
R.N., M.S.N., director of the associate
degree program in nursing at NSU. Fee is
$10 per person and registration will be

Funds for St. Jude
A statewide campaign to raise money
for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
will be conducted by the Louisiana Jaycee
Jaynes during February, according to
Dianne Hoffpauir, state president of the
Jaycee Jaynes. The Louisiana group will
be joining with the United States
Jayceettes nationwide to raise $500,000 for
the hospital during the month.
St. Jude, founded by entertainer Danny
Thomas and located in Memphis, Tenn., is
supported primarily by public contribu-tions.
It is the only research center in the
world that is completely dedicated to con-quering
childhood cancer and other ter-rible
diseases of childhood, Hoffpauir
noted.
Installed as Fellow
Dr. Gordon M. Mead of Shreveport was
inducted as a Fellow of the American
Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons at the
organization's recent annual meeting in
New Orleans. Dr. Mead was one of 547 new
Fellows installed in the ceremonies. The
induction brought the academy's active
membership to 10,345.
The academy is the nation's largest
medical organization for specialists in
bone and joint surgery. To be eligible for
induction, all Fellows must have passed
the certifying examination of the Ameri-can
Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Diabetes Classes
Winter classes for diabetes education
will be conducted by Diet Counseling Ser-vice
at P&S Hospital, beginning Wednes-day
at 3 p.m. and every Wednesday during
the month. Mrs. Frances Hazzard, R.D.,
director of the program, said the classes
will be conducted by Mrs. Barbara
Crenshaw, R.D., who will teach dietary
management, and Mrs. Coreen Sneed,
R.N., who will teach how to use insulin,
care of the feet and how to handle one's
feeling while living with a chronic illness.
Pre-registration is necessary and there
is a $35 fee for the six hours of instruction.
A family member may audit the course at
no charge. Call 227-3851 for more informa-tion.
