Some rather pressing problems...
MOST HOSPITALS give their huge
volume of dirty laundry and linen
to cleaning companies that pick it up in
soiled bundles one day and bring it back
crisp and clean the next.
But Louisiana State University Medical
Center here in Shreveport handles its own
— 10;000 pounds of it every day. Manager
Charles Bridges operates the laundry room
eight hours a day in the hospital basement,
cleaning sheets, pillowcases, towels, those
cute little scrub suits... you name it and if
it's at LSUMC, they wash it.
The hospital uses 400-pound washing
machines that get the clothes a lot cleaner
than most home detergents could ever
hope to.
Most folks would say that 160 degrees
Fahrenheit was hot enough.
From the washers, the clothes go into
huge dryers called extractors. Then it's
onward to the pressing stage, which is done
by a flatwork iron that bears no re-semblance
to the thing one might use to
iron a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. That's
what makes all hospital things look so
smooth and crisp.
In a single year, Bridges and his crew
handle more than 2,600,000 pounds of
soiled linen.
Now, that's a lot of dirty laundry!
