Hot Sun Turns Mock Patients Into Real Patients
Four persons posing as patients during a
mock disaster drill at LSU Medical Center
Wednesday became real patients while awaiting
"treatment" during the drill.
With temperatures hovering near 100 degrees,
four "patients" who lay on the hot pavement
behind the medical center suffered heat exhaus-tion
while awaiting ambulance transport to the
hospital, according to Elaine King, spokes-person
for the medical center.
The medical center was conducting a semi-annual
mock disaster drill. The mock incident
was an explosion and fire in Webster Parish
near Minden. Thirty victims — all students at
Northwestern State University School of Nurs-ing
— were "injured," with at least one "dead on
arrival."
"Four mock patients turned into real ones,"
Mrs. King said, noting some persons lay on the
hot pavement for about 45 minutes.
The fake victims began applying makeup
shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, she said, and
then lay down on the pavement about 1:15 p.m.
to await ambulance transport to the hospital.
Mrs. King said she had understood the am-bulances
from Metro-Medic would arrive about
1:25 p.m. but the units did not come until 1:40
p.m.
Persons with the most severe mock injuries
were transported first, leaving others on the
pavement until about 2 p.m., she said. During
this period, four persons became overheated
and were treated and released from the hospital.
Those suffering from heat exhaustion included
Ammes NcNab, 21, of 6913 Burke; Brenda
Wa'dsworth, 26, of Stonewall; Barry Nell John-son,
26, of 9110 Linwood; and Cheryl Reppond,
21, of 8922 Bernay.
