School Contract Signed Here
By VIRGINIA ROBICHEAUX
Of The Times Staff
A contract was signed here yesterday for beginning
development of the $20 million, 12-story Louisiana State
University Medical School here. It will be the most cost-ly
state building ever built in Louisiana.
The three local architectural
firms signing the planning and
development contract with the
university were Samuel G. Wie-ner
& Associates; Wilson &
Sandifer, and Wiener, , Morgan
& O'Neal.
The medical school complex
will be located immediately
adjacent to and will join to the
Confederate Memorial Hospital
facilities at Kings Highway and
Linwood. It is officially desig-na!
ed LSU Medical School-
Shreveport.
Contemporary in design, the

feet of floor space. It will include
laboratories such as those for
anatomy and biochemistry, ad-ministrative
classrooms and
other type facilities.
Also included will be a sep-arate
wing for a library and
another wing for an auditorium.
Attached to the main wing will
be an outpatient building, the
first phase of the project. Plans
will be out for bids on this phase
in December, 1968, and construc-tion
is expected to begin the next
month.
Plans will be ready for bids on
the main building in April, 1970,
and the whole complex is
expected to be completed in 1972
or 1973.
School officials told The Times
yesterday that the building will
cost more than any other state
public building in Louisiana.
A comparison, shows that Con-federate
Memorial Medical Cen-ter
was constructed for about $10
million and Schumpert Hospital
here cost about $5.5 million.
Dr. M. D. Woodin. executive
vice president of LSU, said the
first class will graduate from the
new four - year school in 1973
partially utilizing Confederate
Memorial and other temporary
facilities.
He said 29 students were
anticipated in 1969 with the
number " e x p e c t e d to rise
progressively to an entering
class of 100."
At full strength, he said, there
would be a total of about '75
students, 25 to 50 graduate
students, and 100 to 200 post-graduate
trainees.
He said the medical school also
will include additional facilities
at the Linwood Apartments locat-ed
a short distance from the
planned complex. These apart-ments
will be used for various
|purposes, including housing of
students and faculty' members.
