OFFICIALS OF THE Shreve-port
Chamber of Commerce
and the Shreveport Medical
Society expressed elation over
passage in both the Senate
and the House of the bill to
establish a medical school in
Shreveport.
Passage of the bill by the
Senate this morning was
termed a "good kickoff" for
establishment of a medical
school here by Douglas F. At-taway,
vice president of the
Community Development Di-vision
of the Shreveport Cham-ber.
Getting a medical school
located here was one of the
projects of the Chamber this
year.
"ESTABLISHMENT OF A
medical school in Shreveport
is a step in the right direc-tion,"
Attaway said. "We
still have a long way to go"
he said, "and it is going to
take time and a lot of work
before it will become a reality.
Attaway praised the work
of the Caddo Parish delega-tion
in the Legislature in get-ting
the bill passed, particu-larly
citing the efforts of Rep.
J. Bennett Johnston Jr., who
introduced the bill in the
House.
Attaway credited the appear-ance
of the large delegation
from the Shreveport Chamber
and the Shreveport Medical
Society at the House commit-tee
hearing in Baton Rouge
last week as strongly influ-encing
the passage of the bill.
The local delegation, as-sembled
by the Chamber's
Governmental Affairs Com-mittee,
also visited with Gov.
John J. McKeithen and se-cured

BATON ROUGE — A four
year medical school for Shreve-port
appeared to be a reality
today as the Senate passed
and sent to the governor a bill
authorizing creation of the
school. The vote was 28 to 9
in favor of the measure.
Gov. John J. McKeithen had
already announced his sup-port
of the measure which was
passed last week by the House
57 to 43. His signature ap-peared
to be a certainty.
SEN. JACKSON B. Davis of
Shreveport handled the bill on
the floor of the Senate and
concluded his remarks by
thanking the senators for ab-staining
from sectionalism in
debating the measure.
"I noted," Davis said, "that
senators from the New Orleans
area, from Southwest Louisi-ana,
from Central Louisiana
and from Northeast Louisiana
all have spoken in support of
the bill."
DAVIS TOLD the Senate
that the Louisiana Medical So-ciety
had unanimously recom-mended
construction of a new
medical college and had said
that Shreveport was the
logical place for it. He said
Shreveport was the only city in
the state outside of New Or-leans
with hospital facilities
large enough to furnish facili-ties
for a four-year medical
school. National standards re-quire
two hospital beds per
medical student.
He said thai from two to
three years will be required
for perfecting plans for the
school. Cost was estimated at
$5 million of which the federal
government will supply $3 mil-lion.
McKeithen told a delega-tion
of Shreveport physicians
recently that the state could
find the $2 million in matching
funds "when the time comes."
SEN. JAMAR ADCOCK of
Monroe, an administration floor
leader who had announced fol-lowing
a committee hearing
that he was reserving the
right to oppose the bill on the
fl»or, supported the measure.
He noted that Rep. Lawrence
Gibbs of Monroe had led the
fight in the House against lo-cating
the school in Shreveport.
"I'M FOR giving my college
Northeast — something that it
can handle," Adcock said.
"They haven't asked me to get
a medical school there and if
they got it they wouldn't know
what to do with it." Later.
Adcock told reporters that phy-sicians
in Monroe had told him
there was not sufficient hospi-
