Three are Named to Medical School Faculty
DR. ROBERT C. CLAWSON
DR. ROBERT L. SMITH
DR. CHARLES D. WOOD
Three new faculty members
have been added to the staff of
Louisiana State University Medi-cal
School at Shreveport, accord-ing
to Dr. Edgar Hull, dean of
the school.
They are Dr. Charles D. Wood,
formerly consultant for pharma-cology
to the U.S. Naval School
of Aviation Medicine, Pensacola,
Fla. now professor of pharmacol-ogy;
Dr. Robert L. Smith
formerly research associate in
biology, Brookhaven National
Laboratory, Upton, N.Y., now
assistant professor of biochemis-try,
and Dr. Robert C. Clawson,
formerly of the Loyola Universi-ty
Stritch School of Medicine,
Chicago, Ill., now assistant pro-fessor
in the Department of
Anatomy..
Dr. Wood has done research in
"epilepsy and altered brain
function due to damage o±
temporal lobe at the National
Institutes of Health from 1953 to
1955; taught at the University of
Arkansas Medical School, 1957 to
1967 in physiology and pharma-cology,
including use of tranquili-zers,
LSD and related drugs, and
from 1967-68 served as -a consult-ant
and visiting scientist at the
Navy Aerospace Medical Insti-tute
Pensacola, Fla., studying
motion sickness and developing
anitimotionsickiness drugs.
He received a.predoctorate fel-lowship
from the National Insti-tutes
of Health while at the
University of North Caroline, and
was awarded the Research Ca-reer
Development Award while
at the University of Arkansas.
Kentucky U. Graduate
He received the B.S. and M.S.
in physiology from the Universi-ty
of Kentucky, and the Ph.D.
from the University of North
Carolina. He also attended the
University of Colorado Medical
School.
Dr. Wood is a member of
Sigma Xi, North Carolina Acade-my
of Science, the Aerospace
Medical Association, the Space
Medicine Branch of Aerospace
Medical Association, and is en
associate member of the Society
of Experimental Biology and
Medicine, and an associate of the
Pulaski County Medical Society.
He and his wife Dr. Mary
Wood, have four children.
Dr. Smith was educated at
Abilene Christian College, where
he received the B.S. degree, and
the University of Tennessee,
where he received both the M.S.
and Ph.D.
He has also served as a
visiting lecturer in chemistry at
Queens College, Charlotte, N.C.,
and as an instructor in chemistry
at Abilene Christian College.
He was awarded a teaching
fellowship from the Department
of Biochemistry at the University
of Tennessee Medical Units, and
a U.S. Public Health Service
Training Grant from the Depart-ment
of Biochemistry at Tennes-see.
His present area of research is
on "protein chemistry, active
sites of proteolytk enzymes."
Dr. Smith is a member of the
American Chemical Society and
Sigma Xi.
Florida Native
A native of Tampa, Fla., Dr.
Clawson received the B.S. degree
in Biology from Spring Hill
College and the M.S. degree in
Anatomy from St. Louis Univer-sity.
He received his 1%. D. degree
in anatomy from Loyola Univer-sity.
Chicago in 1962. Upon
completion of his graduate work
he remained at Loyola under a
National Institutes of Health
post-doctoral fellowship, at which
time he studied electron micros-copy
at the Argonne National
Laboratory.
Dr. Clawson has served on the
faculty of the Loyola University
Stritch School of Medicine in the
Department of Anatomy since
1984 as instructor and assistant
professor teaching gross anato-my
and embryology. He has also
served as secretary to the
Faculty Collegeum of the Medi-cal
School and was serving a
three year term as a member of
the Executive Committee for the
Collegeum at the time he was
appointed to the faculty of the
LSU MedicaJ School.
He's a member of Sigma Xi.
the American Association of
Anatomists, the American Socie-ty
of Zoologists and the Society
for the Study of Reproduction.
His research interests are the
primordial germ cells in the
chick embryo and in changes
occurring in the liver of the
chick at hatching, and has
published in these areas.
His wife, the former Marilyn
Goetze is a native of Wheeling,
W. Va., and a graduate of
Maryville Colle- St. Louis.
They have four children, Mi-chael,
Margaret Mary, David
and Theresa.
