Keith Charges Med School Staff 'Intimidated'

BATON ROUGE — Mooringsport
Sen. Bill Keith today charged Allen
Copping with intimidating professors
at the LSU Medical School in
Shreveport because he believes the
chancellor of the state system is build-ing
"a political fiefdom."
"Allen Copping is behind the whole
thing," Keith said, "He is like an
octopus who reaches out with every
tentacle to build a political kingdom
through the whole state." Keith's ac-cusation
came after testimony in the
Senate Education who was hearing his
bill to establish the LSU Medical
System in Shreveport as a separate
entity.
Keith said the reason no professors
testified on the bill was because Cop-ping
used lower level adminstrators in
Shreveport to scare away proponents
of the measure. "Many were told their
jobs were in jeopardy if they came
down and testified for this bill," the
Mooringsport lawmaker said.
"There has been no harrassment on
my part," Copping said in a telephone
interview. "I have never, and I don't
believe anybody else has ever, stopped
anybody from testifying," he said. The
chancellor does not believe Keith's
charges are true.
Committee members voted three to
two deferring action on the measure
until educators in Shreveport could be
subpoened to testify about the in-timidation
charge. Keith refused to
divulge the names of the professors
whom he says were behind the
charges.
While Keith believes Ike Muslow
who runs the Shreveport facility "is a
fine man," he said he had evidence
that there were rats and roaches in the
facility's psychiatric ward. The
legislator also said he had reports of a
doctor slapping a five year old and of
a man .being locked in a X-Ray room.
Those problems could be rectified if
an administrator in Shreveport had
direct authority over the facility.
