BATON ROUGE - After hearing
from four subpoenaed professors at
the LSU School of Medicine at
Shreveport, the Senate Education
Committee today concluded the
faculty wasn't intimidated and then
killed a bill to give the school its own
chancellor.
A week ago, Sen. Bill Keith of
Shreveport said professors at the
school wouldn't come to testify on
his bill to make the school
autonomous because they were
"threatened and harassed." He
blamed Dr. Allan Copping, chan-cellor
of the LSU Medical System.
Sen. John Saunders of Ville Platte
said he did not find the evidence of
harassment "very intimidating."
Several system staff members
testified, but only former employees
would state for the record that their
employers warned they would lose
their jobs if the doctors appeared in
support of severing ties with other
LSU system medical facilities.
"They have been warned not to
testify," Keith charged, "There are a
great deal of naive people in this
room," he said after the meeting.
The Mooringsport legislator claimed
that lower level administration
personnel threatened proponents of
the separate identity bill.
