Separate inmate ward
at LSU Hospital urged
A separate ward is needed at LSU
Hospital to house prisoners being
treated there, according to a Caddo
grand jury report issued Thursday
following a routine inspection of par-ish
facilities.
The grand jury criticized keeping
prisoners in the same room with
other patients at the hospital, saying
that non-prisoner patients "should
not be subjected to this situation."
The grand jury noted that a new
holding room has been constructed,
but said a viewing window is needed
in the door.
The grand jury, which is required
to inspect facilities on a regular
basis, also .recommended that pris-oners
be given preferential treat-ment
to reduce the chance of escapes
and to reduce the time guards have
to be present with prisoners.
Concerning the Juvenile Detention
Home, the jury cited a need for
increased staff personnel but noted
the facility was clean and in ex-cellent
condition.
At Caddo Correctional Institute,
there needs to be additional guards
and an expanded educational pro-gram
for inmates. The jury recom-mended
that the kitchen ovens at
CC1 be replaced.
The Caddo Parish jail received
high marks from the jury. The group
noted that cell areas were excep-tionally
clean and well furnished.
