LSU med center impresses visiting surgeons
By SALLY REESE
Times Medical Writer
Twenty-two surgeons in a 50-year-old
scientific society spent two days at LSU
Medical Center in Shreveport last week,
learning what's going on there in sur-gery
and medical training.
All are members of the Buffalo Sur-gical
Society in Buffalo, N.Y.. and most
are on the clinical faculty of the State
University of New York. The group,
headed by Dr. B.A. Portin. president of
the society, was here Friday and Satur-day.
The visiting surgeons sat in on scien-tific
sessions with the teaching pro-fessors,
attended the mortality and
morbidity conference (the weekly peer
review), discussed cases with students
in the "senior bullpen." made the grand
rounds, and observed surgeries.
"We put on scrub suits and went in
and watched them operate." Portin said
Friday.
Portin said the society goes out from
Buffalo every year to see what is going
on in the nation's medical centers. He
described the annual pilgrimages as "a
sort of post-graduate education" for the
surgeons, who travel at their own ex-perience.
Since the "30s, the society has
been to nearly every major medical
center in the country, spending two days
at each for observation and exchange of
ideas, he reported.
LSU Medical Center was chosen this
year at the invitation of Dr. John
McDonald, chief of surgery1 and former
member of the society. Portin, who
taught him as a first-year resident at
State University of New York, said "it
was an opportunity to be associated
again with Dr. McDonald, an extremely
well-known transplant and academic
surgeon."
The visitor's impression of the
medical school was flattering.
"Oh, I love it. You have a relatively
new facility here. We're suffering from
old facilities. We're a state school too."
