W. Norman, pro-fessor
and chairman
of the biochemistry de-partment
at the I'n-iversity
of California,
Riverside. He is in-ternationally
known
for his studies on
vitamin I).
Vitamin D expert to speak
Dr Anthony W. Norman, internationally
known for his studies on vitamin D. will lecture
at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport on Jan. 22.
Norman, professor and chairman of the
biochemistry department at the University of
California. Riverside, will come here as a visit-ing
scientist lecturer. He will speak in the
medical school auditorium, his topic being
" F r om Vitamin D to 1. 25-Dihydrox-ycholecalciferol:
Evolution of a Steroid
Hormone."
Norman's interest lies in the mechanism of
steroid hormones, in particular, cholecalciferol
(vitamin D) and calcium and phosphorus
homeostasis.
He has written more than 200 papers and has
been frequently cited for his work with the
vitamin, which is necessary for growth and
maintenance of bone. (Vitamin D deficiency
causes rickets in children and osteoporosis in
adults.)
He has received many honors, including the
Public Health Service Career Development
Award, the Mead Johnson Award of the
American Institute of Nutrition, and the Ernst
Oppenheimer Award of the Endocrine Society.
He received the National Institutes of Health
Special Fellowship.
Norman is a Ph.D. lie received his education
at Oberlin College and the University of
Wisconsin. He is a member of the American
Society of Biological Chemists, Biochemical
Society of England, American Institute of Nutri-tion.
Endocrine Society, and the Royal Society of
Medicine. England.
