Handiwork helps pass the time

Many women with high-risk pregnancies enter
LSU Hospital weeks ahead of their due dates.
They are encouraged to check in early because
the hospital wants their pregnancies to continue as
long as possible — to get closer to term — and wants
to be close at hand in case a medical problem arises.
High-risk mothers are sometimes hospitalized for
weeks before they have their babies.
The hospital's Volunteer Services office has
begun giving them creative handiwork to help them
pass the time. The director, Mrs. Boggs Creamer, said
knitting, crocheting and embroidery are offered and
other creative pastimes are to be added.
These activities alleviate some of the boredom,
which has been a problem in keeping these pregnant
women hospitalized for an indeterminate time.
"However, staying is important," she em-phasized,
"because things can go wrong quickly in a
high-risk pregnancy."
Volunteers are available to the women for help
with the handiwork. Every morning and afternoon
they join them either in their rooms or in a room that
has been set aside for the crafts.
Volunteers Polly Waldron and Mary Lewis are
coordinators, and Marjorie Field, Harriette Palmer,
Mavice Wallette, Portia Anderson, Flora Murry and
Mimi Glassell are assistants.
Martha McDonald, president of the LSU Medical
Center-Shreveport Faculty Women's Club, is
responsible for the games provided for the patients'
amusement, together with books, records and the
handicrafts.
Minicourses in nutrition, baby care, food prepara-tion,
art, music, indoor plants, and interior decoration
began this month, reported Mrs. Creamer.
The Volunteer Services office said the community
could help further the program by contributing knit-ting
and crochet needles, embroidery hoops, yarn and
thread, quilt squares, tape and fabric remnants,
material for baby blankets, jigsaw puzzles and games.
Mrs. Creamer said the office also could use more
volunteers.
