Medical Center's advisory
board last night again took up
the malpractice insurance
problem facing its staff physi-cians.
-.Two physicians on the visit-v
ing staff at the hospital have
resigned within the past week
because of exposure to possi-ble
malpractice claims
through their work at the
hospital, Dr. H. Whitney
Boggs Jr., president of the
visiting staff and a board
member, said.
Some of the visiting staff
members are paid and some
work on a volunteer basis, ad-ministrator
Robert C. Hall
said.
"There are not going to be
any wholesale resignations"
of staff members, Dr. Boggs
told the board, but there may
be a few others for the same
reason.
At March's board meeting
Hall said that an opinion from
Louisiana Atty. Gen. William
Guste said that all medical
staff members must provide
their own malpractice in-surance.
And, Hall told the board,
the opinion also said that if a
judgment is issued, against
the hospital in a malpractice
suit and it is determined that
the physician was at fault,
the state would take action to
recover the amount from the
doctor.
The problem centering
around malpractice coverage
may be "just a little ripple on
the water" right now, Dr.
Boggs said, but it could
evolve into a major problem
for the hospital.
Also during the meeting
Hall told the board that
Louisiana Downs produced
$200,000 that was turned over
to CMMC. He said that
$475,000 had been anticipated.
