Shreveport Times 12/Medical School
Gets Visiting
Professorship
One of 30 visiting professorships
awarded for 1974 by the Journal of
Pediatrics Medical Education Foun-dation
has been received by the depart-ment
of pediatrics at the Louisiana State
University School of Medicine in
Shreveport.
Dr. Alex J. Steigman, professor of
pediatrics at Mount Sinai School of
Medicine of the City University of New
York, will visit the department for a
week beginning Monday, according to
Dr. Joseph Little, head of the depart-ment.
The local visiting professorship was
the only one awarded in Louisiana.
Dr. Steigman is scheduled to work
within the department with staff mem-bers
and medical students. He will speak
at 8 a.m. Friday about "A New Look at
Tuberculosis."
He is expected to evaluate the depart-ment,
according to Dr. Little.
Dr. Steigman received his M.D.
degree from Temple University in
Philadelphia, Pa. in 1938 and later
worked under a National Reserch Coun-cil
Senior Fellowship in Pediatrics at the
Children's Hospital Research Foundation
in Cincinnati, where he worked with Dr
Albert Sabin.
He was a special consultant on com-municable
disease for the United States
Public Health Service and from 1964-1966
served as a special staff member for the
Rockefeller Foundation as a visiting
professor at the All India Institute of
Medical Scineces, New Delhi.
Between 1941 and 1943, Dr. Steigman
was an instructor in pediatrics and in
preventive medicine at the Harvard
School of Medicine and the School of
Public Health.
While with Harvard, he served with
