Shreveport-Bossier Foundation WEDNESDAY, FEB. 13, 1974 THE SHREVEPORT TIMES
$85,643 Community Grants Distributed

The Shreveport - Bossier Foundation
yesterday dispensed $85,643 in grants
among seven local institutions and
organizations toward community better-ment
projects.
Receiving the largest grant was the
Caddo Foundation for Exceptional
Children, doing business as Mollie E.
Webb Speech and Hearing Center. Lester
C. Haas and William C. Peatross accep-ted
the $21,280 grant on behalf of the
foundation.
It was one of seven donations -from
the Justin and Eugenie Torr Gras Trusts
announced at the foundation's annual
meeting by Foundation Chairman Robert
McLean Jeter Jr.
The others included $15,350 to the
Shreveport Regional Bicentennial Com-mission;
$15,000 to Centenary College;
$12,600 to Jesuit High School; $8,142 to
Louisiana State University Medical Cen-ter
- Shreveport; $5,000 to the Historic
Preservation of Shreveport; and $2,126 to
the Shreveport Symphony.
In addition a $4,000 grant was given
to the Louisiana State University
Medical Center for| the intensive care
nursery for newborn infants. The
donation was from the foundation's M. L.
and Leona Winter Bath Fund.
Another $2,145 went to Centenary Col-lege
for use in acquiring contemporary
government and American politics books
for the library. The money for the grant
was acquired by the foundation from
donations made in the memory of
Charlton Havard Lyons Sr.
The Bicentennial Commission will use
its funds to match another grant to in-stall
a reflecting pool in the Central
Related Story, Photo on 15-A
River Park Area of the Clyde E. Fant
Memorial Parkway.
Centenary's $15,000 will pay for the
renovation of the third floor of Mickle
Hall for the general chemistry
laboratory.
Capital repairs to Jesuit's ad-ministration
- classroom building will be
made with the foundation funds.
Other monies will be spent for special
project - planning for a faculty retreat in
connection with the goals and objectives
of the medical center; capital
acquisitions by the. preservation group
and 80 musicians' chairs for the
Shreveport Symphony.
The Shreveport - Bossier Foundation
allows persons to make donations to the
Foundation for restricted and unrestric-ted
purposes; to provide for a wise use
of funds for philanthropic purposes of the
community and to use the monies
received by the Foundation for com-munity
purposes on the most efficient
basis.
Projects Considered
The funds are distributed after con-sideration
of possible projects by the
foundation's board of directors.
Monies used by the foundation have
included donations by sustaining mem-bers
on an annual basis; the Bath Trust
fund; the trust with the First National
Bank of Shreveport under the wills of the
Gras, and the Easter Basket Ladies
Fund.
In 1973 the Foundation handed out
$78,268 in grants.
Also during the session a resolution
was passed to the memory of Charlton
H. Lyons, a former foundation chairman
who died last year.
Cecil Ramey was designated by the
City Council to fill another five - year
term as the city's representative on the
foundation.
