Schumpert, LSU Medical
Center get Gannett grants
Schumpert Medical Center and
Louisiana State University Medical
Center in Shreveport have been
awarded a total of $45,000 in grants
by the Gannett Newspaper Founda-tion.
Schumpert received $25,000
toward the purchase of metabolic
measuring equipment for the cen-ter's
asthma-allergy research unit to
aid in treating children's lung prob-lems.
The LSU Medical School was
awarded $20,000 to buy a spec-trometer
needed for research in in-fectious
diseases.
The Gannett Foundation was es-tablished
by the late founder of the
Gannett group of newspapers, but is
independent of Gannett Co. Inc.
It contributes locally to charitable
causes in communities served by the
78 Gannett daily newspapers (of
which The Times is one) and na-tionally
to journalism education and
professionalism.
Foundation President John A.
Scott said that grants of cash or
foundation-owned Gannett stock au-thorized
by the Gannett Foundation
to date this year total about $4.9
million.
