Mary Jo Wood
When Mary Jo Wood en-tered
medicial school in 1962,
she was thirty-five years old
and the mother of four
children. Now acting chief of
the radiology department at
Confederate Medicial Center
and associate professor at
LSU Medical School-
Shreveport, she had studied
pre-med at college, then
worked as a secretary after
her marriage.
A dozen years later, with
her husband, Charles,
teaching at the University of
Arkansas Medical School, her
mother living nearby, and her
children in school, the
moment came to resume her
education.
Charles bundled the
children off to school in the
morning, except for the
semester when he taught his
wife's 8 o'clock class. ("I
made the highest B in the
class," she remembers, but he
wouldn't give her an A).
Older, married students
have one advantage over the
others, observes Dr. Wood:
the motivation and drive to
study late into the night.
Nowadays, however, medical
schools "do not like to take
applicants over the age of
thirty."
