A $79,208 Public Health Sery-ice
grant has been approved for
the s i x -year medical school
curriculum at Louisiana State
University Medical School at
Shreveport.
The grant will be used "for
continuing development and ac-tivation
of program for motivat-ed
and outstanding high school
students," according to a tele-gram
from U.S. Senators Allen
J. Ellender and Russell B. Long
and U.S. Rep. Joe D. Waggon-ner
Jr.
Under the program, outstand-ing
high school students are
selected to complete medical
school in six years, according to
Dr. Charles Black, associate
dean in charge of special
projects.
Students in the program at-tend
LSU at Shreveport for two
academic years, and enter the
medical school the third year.
They receive both the bachelor
of science and the medical
doctor degrees.
There are 13 men and two
women presently in the pro-gram,
including seven who
started last year and eight who
enrolled this summer. Two
students are from Texas, one
from Alexandria and the rest
from North Louisiana.
Because of the concentrated
course work and accelerated
curriculum, the students must
have above a 'B' average, Black
said.
