Yellow Pollen
Sneezing
Season Is
In Now
The sneezing season has
rolled into Shreveport with a
thin layer of yellow pollen
covering autos, sidewalks
and streets t h r o u g h o u t
much of the city.
Dr. Albert L. Stephens
Jr., an allergist and clinical
instructor of medicine at the
LSU Shreveport School of
Medicine, said most of the
visible pollen is pine.
He said a heavy downpour
Wednesday afternoon may
have given temporary relief
to those allergic to the
pollen by clearing the air of
the tiny grains, but that the
rain's effect will be only
temporary.
Stephens said a pollen-count
showed that in addi-tion
to pine pollen, the air is
also filled with oak and elm
pollen.
He said of the three, that
probably oak and elm pollen
present more allergy prob-lems.
Stephens said a relatively
few people are allergic to
pine pollen and many who
believe they are allergic to
it actually are allergic to
oak or elm pollen.
He g a v e no hope for
respite from pollen for aller-gy
sufferers.
"Grass pollen will become
a problem about April 1,
along with pecan and hicko-ry,"
he said.
