State Rep. J. Bennett Johnston
Jr., chairman of the site procure-ment
committee for the Nor-hwest
Louisiana School for the
Mentally Retarded, said yester-day
his committee soon will
begin looking at proposed sites
for the $5-million facility.
Johnston said the panel wants
a 100-acre site within 15 to 25
minutes of downtown Shreveport.
The committee would prefer to
have the site donated, he said,
but would also look at sites for
sale at a "reasonable" cost.
Johnston was appointed chair-man
of the seven-man committee
last week. Other members are
state Rep. Frank Fulco; Caddo
Police Juror Lonnie Aulds; Dr.
Edgar Hull, dean of LSU-Shreveport
Medical School; He-per
Long, director of the State
Exhibit Museum; and Shreveport
businessmen P. J. Mills and
James Gibson.
E. Lee Agerton, director of the
state Department of Hospitals,
said representatives of area
police juries also have been
asked to work with the commit-tee.
Johnston said the 500-bed facil-ity
will have an annual payroll of
about $1 million.
