Merger Plan
Under Study
A Legislative Council on Gov-ernmental
Reorganization is stu-dying
a proposal which would
incorporate the facilities of Con-federate
Memorial Medical Cen-ter
here and Charity Hospital,
New Orleans, with the medical
schools of Louisiana State Univ-ersity
and Tulane University.
The council also is studying a
report recommending combina-tion
of the Department of Health
and Hospitals and giving thought
to eventually turning the charity
hospitals over to the communi-ties
in which they are located.
Gov. John McKeithen said
yesterday within 10 years there
would probably be no need for
charity hospitals in the state
since "you can go anywhere and
the government will pay for it."
Gov. McKeithen said he had
appointed an advisory committee
to administer a $20 million bond
issue for improvements on New
Orleans Charity Hospital.
McKeithen said the committee
included both the heads of the
Tulane and LSU Medical schools.
The bonds were authorized by
the 1966 legislature.
