For Meeting
Representatives from health,
medical, welfare, rehabilitation,
business, education, veteran
groups, civic groups, and others
will meet today with state
officials to -discuss ways of
establishing a comprehensive
rehabilitation services center in
Shreveport.
The meeting, sponsored by
the Rehabilitation Services
Committee of the Community
Council, will be held at 3:30
p.m. at the Shreveport Associa-tion
for the Blind, 1750 Clai-borne
Ave.
Forrest Dunn, committee
chairman, said, "In 1968 the
legislature approved a bill
presented by Caddo Parish
Rep. Donald W. Williamson and
sponsored by the entire North-west
delegation authorizing the
establishment of a multiservice
rehabilitation center for handi-capped
people. Unfortunately,
funds to establish the center
were not forthcoming.
"We are meeting today with
Curtis Johnston, state director
of the Division of Vocational
Rehabilitation; Dr. Edgar Hull,
dean. L.S.U.-Shreveport School
of Medicine, and Williamson to
d i s c u s s new developments
which indicate there is an
excellent chance of establishing
the center in the near future,"
Dunn added.
The center will be located in
two buildings of the Linwood
Apartments which is owned by
the L.S.U.-Shreveport School of
Medicine. If will offer services
to handicapped people which
are not available to residents of
the northwest part of the State.
When handicapped persons
need these services, it is
necessary for the Division of
Vocational Rehabilitation to
send them to the Rehabilitation
Center in Hot Springs, Ark. or
to Houston.
"The establishment of such a
center will offer badly needed
services to the many thousands
of handicapped persons residing
in our area. These services will
include medical, social, psycho-logical
and vocational evalua-tion,"
Dunn said.
