At Civic Center Dinner
Dean Hull Described
As Complete Physician
Dr. Edgar Hull was described
last night as the c o m p 1 e t e
physician by Dr. William H.
Stewart of New Orleans, chan-cellor
of the LSU M e d i c a l
center.
Hull dean of the LSU School
of Medicine at Shreveport and a
p h y s i c i a n for 46 years, is
retiring from academic medi-cine
July 1. He was honored last
night at a d i n n e r at the
Shreveport Civic Theater, the
climax of Edgar Hull Day.
Dr. George Meneely, associ-ate
dean of the local school, also
announced that two endowments
will be set up in Hull's name
and that a portrait and bust will
be given to the medical school.
LEBLANC ENDOWMENT
The LeBlanc Family of St.
.Gabriel .Endowment for Cardiol-ogy
Award will be given annual-ly
to a resident, fellow or
trainee in c a r d i o l o g y at a
hospital affiliated with the LSU
Medical School "who has. made
the most outstanding contribu-tion
to cardiology exemplifying
the scholarship and ideals of
Edgar Hull." The professor and
head of the d e p a r t m e n t of
medicine at the school will select
the winner with the approval of
the dean of the scliool.
The recipient will receive a
monetary award and a plaque.
The award will first be given
next year.
The Lewis Gottlieb Scholar
Endowment will be given an-nually
— beginning at this
year's commencement ceremo-nies
— to a senior medical
student who, on the basis of
scholarship and achievement,
best exemplifies the ideals of
Edgar Hull. It will also carry
with it a monetary award and
plaue.
The winner will be selected by
a committee appointed by the
dean.
The John Clay Park Portrait
was presented to the school by
Lewis Gottlieb of Baton Rouge,
while Dr. Alice B. Holoubek and
Dr. Joe E. Holoubek gave the
Leslie Stewart Meneely Portrait
Bust of Hull to the school.
Meneely also announced that
Holoubek will serve as chairman
and Dr. Charles L. Black as
cochairman of the Edgar Hull
Fund Committee w h i c h will
r e c e i v e contributions in the
name of Hull.
A total of 460 people were
registered for the dinner.
Other speakers were Dr. Clar-ence
H. Webb, clinical professor
of pediatrics at the LSU Medical
School at Shreveport and a clo-e
friend of Hull's; Dr. William W.
Frye, former chancellor at the
LSU Medical Center, and MalJo-ry
Page Hull, Dr. Hull's wife..
Stewart said that in the field
of medicine, range of rank
extends from physician to mid-dling
good physician to good to
excellent, but "complete physi-cian
is the highest rank and is
rarely attained."
Hull, he said, not only knows
what to do in the realm of
medical science, but why he is
doing it, something acquired
from a broad base knowledge.
ALWAYS IN COMMAND
"He always has command of
the situation from the moment
he enters the patient's room,"
Stewart said. "He knows what
to do and why he is doing it.
"He has superior skill in
communication," Stewart said,
explaining that the dean can
explain the illness, begin thera-py
and allay any anxieties.
Frye described Hull as "Mr.
Medicine in Louisiana and in
the South, while Webb said he
had the "mark of a modest
genius . . . his conferees seek
identification with him."
Webb pledged local medical
support to the dean designate,
Dr. Clifford G. Gurlee Jr., who
will take over July 1.
Hull, dressed in a dark suit
with a purple tie, said he felt
"tremendous gratitude for what
my friends have done for me —
not just tonight, but throughout
my professional career."
