Outlines Health Survey—
Dr. Carroll Assumes
Medical Society Reins
Dr. W. H. Carroll, local
radiologist, assumed the of-fice
of president of the
Shreveport Medical Society
Tuesday night and announced
plans to appoint a committee
to survey the health care
needs of the community.
Dr. Carroll said every per-son
should have access to
adequate medical services
and no person should be made
destitute by catastrophic ill-ness.
"SOUND USE AND devel-opment
of resources for medi-cal
care are the shared
responsibility of the public,
physicians, patients, hospital
administrators and third par-ties
who pay for medical
services," Dr. Carroll said.
"Insurance programs which
cover the cost of an adequate
level of medical services and
catastrophic illness must be
made available to everyone."
He said needs of the poor in
obtaining medical attention
vary and include transporta-tion
to the physician's office
or to Confederate Memorial
Medical Center, baby sitting
for patients visiting the doc-tor,
drugs for those who
cannot afford them, home
nursing services and care of
the aged.
OTHER NEW OFFICERS
of the society include Dr.
William M. Allums, president
elect; Dr. James D. Talbot,
first vice president; Dr. D. A.
Hiller, second vice president;
Dr Seborn E. Woods, secre-tary;
Dr. William H. Haynie,
treasurer; and Dr. C. H.
Webb, historian. Board mem-bers
are Dr. Margaret Akin,
Dr. Roy F. Brabham, Dr. H.
Whitney Boggs, Dr. Donald
R. Martin, Dr. Andrew J.
Mullen, Dr. D. F. Overdyke
and Dr. Herbert Tucker.
Dr. Carroll, radiologist at
Schumpert and Fairfield Hos-pitals,
is also associate pro-fessor
of radiology at Louisia-na
State University School of
Medicine here.
HE WAS EDUCATED at
Louisiana Tech and Louisiana
State University and received
his medical degree from the
LSU School of Medicine. He
interned at Highland Hospital
and his residency in patholo-gy
was at New Orleans
Charity Hospital and in ra-diology
at the old Shreveport
Charity Hospital and Henry
Ford Hospital, Detroit, Mich.
He and his wife, the former
Aldora Freeman, have two
daughters. Candy Carroll and
Mrs. Thomas Stone.
The new president-elect,
Dr. Allums, received his
bachelor's degree from Cente-nary
College and his medical
degree from Tulane Medical
School. His internship and
residency were both at the old
Shreveport Charity Hospital
and he served two vears at
the U.S. Naval Hospital in
Charleston.. S.C He is an
internist and is a diplomat of
the American Board of Inter-nal
Medicine and a Fellow of
the American College of Phy-sicians.
Dr. and Mrs. Allums, the
former B a r b a r a Johnston,
have four children, Bill, John,
Betsy and Bob Allums.
