College consent decree
update given LSU board
The Louisiana State University Board
of Supervisors was brought up to date
on the consent decree for college de-segregation
at its meeting Friday in
Shreveport.
Dr. Joseph Reynolds, vice president
of academic affairs for the LSU system,
said a meeting to see whether the
parties involved are coming to terms
will be held April 7. Bossier Parish
Community College, Southern Univer-sity-
Shreveport, U.S. Justice Depart-ment,
LSU and the Louisiana Board of
Regents have until May 1 to decide
whether they will go along with the
recommendations of an independent
study panel. Any issues which cannot be
settled among the parties will be de-cided
in court.
Reynolds commended the LSU Medi-cal
Center for its help in developing
allied health programs at Southern Uni-versity-
New Orleans, Southern Univer-sity-
Baton Rouge and Grambling State
University. Those programs were
called for in the consent decree.
The Board of Supervisors awarded a
plaque to Dr. Fred Ratzburg of
Shreveport, honoring him as the oldest
living former member of the board. He
served on the board 19 years until 1939.
Dr. Ratzburg, 98, practiced dentistry in
Shreveport 68 years. He is a 1903 gradu-ate
of LSU.
Also at Thursday's meeting, the
Board of Supervisors approved reports
from committees on budget and fi-nance,
oil and gas, legal education and
property and facilities.
The preliminary capital outlay rec-ommendation
for the LSU system as
submitted by the governor shows
$400,000 to plan a new administration
building at LSU in Shreveport and $19.8
million for five projects at LSU Medical
Center in Shreveport.
