Med school seniors
honored at convocation
Several of the senior students who
will receive their medical degrees
from LSU Medical Center School of
Medicine here today were recognized
Friday in the first annual Student
Awards Convocation of the medical
school.
Thomas S. Roberts of Monroe received
the Chancellor's Award from Dr. Allen A.
Copping, chancellor of the LSU Medical
Center system, for academic, leadership
and professional attributes. Along with a
plaque, he received a $1,000 check, funded
by American Bank and Trust Co.
Susan O. Pintado of Arabi received the
Faculty Award for Academic Achievement
from Dr. Perry G. Rigbv, dean of the
medical school. This cash award goes to
the senior with the highest grade average
for four years of medical schocl.
The Robert T. Lucas Award was pres-ented
to Darrell S. Barnett of Shreveport
by Dr. Joseph A. Bocchini Jr., associate
professor of pediatrics. This cash award Is
given by the Shreveport Pediatric Society
In honor of the pediatrician for whom it Is
named.
Ted Broox Warren of Haughton received
the Family Practice Award from Dr.
Arthur Fort, acting head of the family
practice department. This award is spon-sored
by the Women's Auxiliary of the
Louisiana Academy of Family Practice for
the senior medicai student embodying the
highest ideals of the specialty.
The Lee Ann Koskie Memorial Award for
excellence In the study of hematology was
presented to Virginia W. Small of Ida by
Dr. Darryl M. Williams, professor of medi-cine
and chief of the hematology section.
Richard I. Ballard of Farmerville re-ceived
the Louisiana Orthopedic Associa-tion
Award for the outstanding senior stu-dent
in orthopedic surgery. It was pres-ented
by Dr. James A. Albright, head of the
orthopedic surgery department.
The Bick Award for outstanding ability in
psychiatry was presented to John C. Har-din
III of Shreveport by Dr. John H. Allen,
assistant dean for student affairs.
Dave M. Rayburn of Llbuse received the
Upiohn Achievement Award for excellence
in academics and competence In medical
performance, also presented by Allen.
Allen presented the Lewis Gottlieb Schol-ar
Award to Janet D. Brown of Lake
Charles, the senior manifesting the ideals
of Dr. Edgar Hull, the medical school's
first dean, for scholarship and devotion to
patients.
Christa P. Rodriguez of Loreauvllle re-ceived
the Shreveport Medical Society
Award as the student showing the most
desirable attributes for the doctor-patient
relationship. Presenting the award was Dr.
Clarence Webb, pediatrician and historian
for the society.
The award for Specialty Surgical In-strumentation-
Urology was presented to
Robert L. Humble by Dr. Dennis D.
Venable.
Ted Broox Warren, senior class presi-dent,
presented the Adrian F. Reed Award
(for the outstanding basic science Instruc-tor)
to Dr. Warren D. Grafton, professor of
pathology. He presented the Clarence H.
Webb Award (for outstanding clinical In-structor)
to Dr. Joseph A. Bocchini Jr.
General student awards were:
Ciba Award for Outstanding Service, to
sophomore Larry E. Easterllng of
Monroe; Sherman E. Matthews Pathology
Prize, sophomore Theresa G. Vlcroy of
Ponchatoula; Stewart Memorial Award
for excellence In the study of human
anatomy, freshman Bart G. LeJeune of
Church Point; Sandoz Award for academic
achievement in psychiatry, junior James
J. Zakris of Bossier City.
Medical society recognized
Recognized Friday at the first an-nual
Student Awards Convocation at
LSU Medical Center's School of Medi-cine
here were members of the Alpha
Omega Alpha honor medical society
and medical research students.
In Alpha Omega Alpha, they were Janet
D. Brown of Lake Charles, Susan O. Pin-tado
of Arabi, and Dave M. Rayburn of
Libuse, seniors elected in their lunior year.
Also, Michael S. Alexander of Lafayette,
Darrell S. Barnett and Eric S. Bennos of
Shreveport, Melanie C. Firmln of Plneville,
James L. Gates of Princeton, Horrell A.
Grand of Lafayette, Elaine R. High of
Houma, Harold K. Hughens of Monroe,
Arlene Klrschner of Covington, Cynthia C.
Morgan of Natchitoches, Thomas S. Rob-erts
of Monroe, Christa P. Rodriguez of
Loreauvllle, and Jean K. White and Roger
M. Williams of Lake Charles, all seniors
elected in their senior year.
Class of '83 members are Michael F.
Doucet of Washington, La., Thomas G.
Ledbetter of Alexandria, and Laura F.
Sherrod of Monroe.
Recognition for medical student re-search
honors went to Thavne Larson of
Metairie; Daniel Butler III of Shreveport,
Keri B. Hodges of Winnsboro, Ronald B.
Taylor of Bossier City, Barbara T. Thomp-son
of Baton Rouge, and Robert P.
Marshall of Shreveport.
