Get a medical assessment
The day started out great. It was
May 24, the day LSU Medical Center
was to register its first class of physi-cal
therapy students on the
Shreveport campus. It was a day
preceded by many months of intense
preparation and years of planning. I
arose early, wanting to get to the
office to take care of last minute
details prior to the students' arrival.
Upon arriving at the office, I went
through the ritualistic activity of
scanning the morning paper before
getting down to work. A banner on the
front page caught my eye —
"Muscular therapy helps ease pain."
Being keenly interested in the subject
I quickly turned to page one of the
Update Section. What awaited me
there was more than I was prepared
to address.
The article proceeded to discuss a
"new form of therapy" designed to
deal with functional problems in the
motor system. A feeble attempt was
made to try and distinguish between a
"muscle therapist" and a physical
therapist. The most salient dist-inguishing
feature was missed, how-ever.
It was that physical therapists
are educated in the medical environ-ment
and function under the medical
referral system. Physical therapists
are acutely aware of situations in
which exercise or physical manipu-lation
of the body are contraindicated
and most certainly understand that
pain is brought about by provocation
of sensory nerves. Mr. Landry states
that muscle therapists deal "with
basically intact people" Persons in
pain are not "basically intact." Pain
serves a purpose. It tells the body that
something is wrong. I don't know
about other individuals, but when
something is wrong with my body, I
want a medical assessment per-formed.
