Medical school observes
seventh Founder's day
Sen. J. Bennett Johnston Jr. was the guest-speaker
at the seventh annual Founder's Day
activities at Louisiana State University Medical
Center School of Medicine in Shreveport this morn-ing.
Johnston, who as a state senator introduced the
bill authorizing establishment of the school of
medicine in Shreveport, spoke of the early days
when medical and community leaders in
Shreveport got together and decided that North
Louisiana needed a medical school.
"The enthusiasm was tangible and real," he said.
"If we could've bottled it or canned it, we could
have sold it to any sales group in the country.
"I have never seen a community — political,
business, medical — come together like this one
did. Everyone in the Shreveport community came-together."
And on Oct. 27, 1975,the $100 million medical
school was dedicated.
Today the school has an operating budget of $71
million annually, and according to Johnston,
"graduates compare way above average with other
schools across the country."
