Sees Shortage
Of Internships
Confederate Memroial Cen-ter
faces a possible shortage
of internes for the coming
year, according to Dr. Edgar
G a l l o w a y , director of the
center.
Dr. Galloway told the cen-ter's
board of directors Tues-day
night that if more intern-s
h i p applications are not
forthcoming, "we are going to
come up pretty short." He
said 14 medical students have
applied for the rotating intern-ships,
three for straight med-icine
internships and two for
straight pediatric interships.
THE BOARD voted, at its
previous meeting, funds for
extensive recruiting of in-terns,
but Dr. Galloway said
Tuesday night the house staff
felt the delayed action was too
late and that some places
send students out to recruit in
early September.
In other action, the board
voted to reinstate free meals
for visiting staff members
who volunteer their time to
the hospital and who are
working there at meal time.
The free-meal category does
not include physicians paid by
either Confederate or Louisia-na
State University Medical
School at Shreveport.
This action recinds a move
taken over a year ago to
eliminate the free meals, and
Dr. Galloway said there has
been a lot of resentment
among theose who are made
to pay for the meals.
THE MOTION to reinstate
the free meals was made by
Tommy Thompson of Minden.
LSU Dean Edgar Hull and T.
B. Lanford, chairman of the
board, urged the board to
study the matter before vot-ing,
but they did not oppose
the move.
Galloway said he did not
have an estimate of the cost
of the meals, but Robert Hall,
assistant administrator, esti-mated
it would not be more
than 10 meals a day.
The board also approved a
recommendation of the visit-ing
staff to add Dr. Glenn
Gary Brooks to the visiting
staff from the Department of
Obstetrics and Cynecology.
A. COMMITTEE composed
of Gen. Spencer Hardy, Dr.
Andrew Mullen and Dr. Gallo-way,
was directed to study the
question of the color of the
brick to be used for the
outpatient department of the
new LSU Medical School here.
Excavation for the founda-tion
of the $1.3 million facility
is under way now, but the
color of the brick has not been
selected.
