Confederate
Is Approved
For Medicare
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center has been approved for
participation in the medicare
program, Loye M. Copeland
district manager of the New
Orleans Social Security office
announced yesterday.
The action came five months
after the board made applica-tion,
and after several delays by
the federal government.
Confederate becomes the se
cond Shreveport hospital to ac-cept
m e d i c a r e patients in
Shreveport and the third in the
parish. Schumpert Hospital and
North Caddo Memorial Hospital
in Vivian are already approved.
Confederate board Chairman
T. B. Lanford said that he had
been advised of the acceptance
and "am pleased that they
approved us."
Lanford said that the program
became effective immediately.
The chairman emphasized that
the hospital board of directors
voted to accept medicare pa-tients
on the same basis that
they accept all other patients —
they must be residents of
Louisiana and medically indi-gent.
The board voted that it will
accept only needy persons 65 and
over.
When the board voted to apply
for the program, it stressed that
medicare patients will be subject
to the same screening proce-dures
as all other patients at the
charity institution. They said
that they would not accept
patients who are not needy—
whether or not they are eligible
for medicare—because they do
not wish to compete with private
hospitals.
The acceptance of medicare
came after many months of
discussion and study by board
members. The hospital's position
has been unique in the area
because of its state ownership
and its large * percentage of
services for the needy through
the Kerr-Mills program for the
aged.
