Flu Bug Makes Inroads At Local Medical Center
Confederate Memorial Medi-cal
Center is in the early stages
of a little flu problem, Dr Edgar
Galloway, hospital director, told
he directors last night.
"The last few days several
people have been out with the
flu," he reported.
Galloway told the Times later
the numbers absent have not
been great.
"So far we have been able to
cover," he said, "but if we get a
bunch r e p o r t e d out a flu
epidemic might be more preva-ent."
He said that, for instance, two
cooks have been reported ab-sent
because of flu.
Dr. Pattie Van Hook, director
of the Caddo-Shreveport Health
Unit told The Times earlier this
week that there has been an
ncrease in flu like illnesses
around the state.
Galloway also told the board
hat 44 medical students have
applied for internships at the
lospital.
These include 29 for rotating
internships; 10 straight medi-cine;
three straight pediatrics,
and two straight obstetrics-gy-necologists.
Only 22 applications were
received last year, he said.
He attributed the increase in
interest in the CMMC spots to
"a strong effort on the house
staff and the visiting staff who
have made an effort to contact
people and get them interested)
in coming and v i s i t i n g the |
hospital."
Most of the students are from
Louisiana State University Med-ical
School in New Orleans.
LSU-Shreveport M e d i c a l
School Dean Dr. Edgar Hull
reported that there will be 41
students in the freshman class
next September.
Only 40 students were accept-ed
this year and the additional
student has been added, he said,
"because according to the U.S.
Health, Education and Welfare
tables, with 41 we are eligible to
get more grant money than with
40."
Hull reported that a man from
the HEW office in Dallas visited
Confederate last week to
quaint officials with provisions
of the new Health and Educa-tion
Professional Act.
The dean e s t i m a t e d that
Confederate has a chance to get
some $3 to $4 m i l l i o n for
renovations under the grant.
