VA Hospital to Conduct
Alcoholism Symposium
A symposium on alcoholism
will be held at the Veterans
Hospital, Wednesday and Thurs-day.
L. M. Frazier Jr., hospital
Director, announced. The sym-posium
will be presented for
professional and lay people who
work with alcoholics, Frazier
said, and will be conducted by
the staff of the Psychology
Department.
S e v e r a l aspects of the
treatment of this disease will be
discussed including pharmocolo-gy
of alcoholism, management
of the alcoholics in industry,
detoxification and physiology of
alcoholism, social aspects of
alcoholism, and psychological
spect of alcoholsim.
These subiects will be dis-cussed
by outstanding leaders in
the field pi alcoholism, including
Harry Pearson, Detroit. Mich,,
who is an international repre-sentative
of United Auto Work-ers;
Asnton Bris.solara, execu-tive
director of the Committee
on Alcoholsim and Drug Abuse
of Greater New Orleans: Frank
Blackburn, c h i e f , Alcoholism
Division, Department of Hospi-tals,
State of Louisiana; Dr.
Morton Brown, chief, pulmon-ary
Diesease Section, Va Hospi-tal
New Orleans; Dr. Helmut
Redetzki, professor and head of
the Department of Pharmacolo-gy,
Louisiana State University
School of Medicine at Shreve-port:
and Andre' LaRochelle
administrator, Alcoholism Out-patient
Clinic and Counseling
Service of Shreveport.
In addition to these speakers
several other Shreveport people
involved in working with alcoh-ism
will be on the program.
The problem of alcoholism
has recently been recognized as
a major social problem. The
Veterans Administration system
has been one of the leaders and
pioneers in the development of
alcoholic treatment programs
including a treatment unit at
the Shreveport VA Hospital.
The symposium starts at 1
p.m. Wednesday and adjourns
at 5:00 p.m. Thursday.
