Opening Set
Cooper Road area residents
may begin today making
appointments to see doctors
at the free health clinic
opening March 15 at the
Cooper Road Multipurpose
Center, 2117 Russell Rd.
Headed by Dr. Allen J.
Herbert, a second-year pedia-trics
resident at Confederate
Memorial Medical Center, the
clinic will be voluntarily
manned by a 16-member staff
of residents and interns from
Confederate, as well as volun-teer
nurses and paramedical
personnel. Dr. Herbert served
two years as a U.S. Navy
Medical officer and plans to
get his masters degree in
public health work.
Assisting the young doctors
will be three LSU Medical
School staff members, Dr.
Joseph Little, head of pedia-trics
department, Dr. Sue
Chambers, instructor in pe-diatrics,
and Dr. Ralph Bau-cum,
Jr., assistant professor
in pediatrics.
The clinic will be open
daily from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
providing "high quality medi-cal
care on a continuous basis
in a convenient, comfortable
setting that will preserve the
patient's dignity."
Dr. Herbert said, "It is the
experience of residents at
Confederate who work treat-ing
illness in low income
families that medical care is
not sought until disease has
progressed to such an ad-vanced
stage that there is a
tremendous increase in mor-bidity
and mortality.
"Medical care is an expen-sive
and often frustrating
experience for these people.
There are no private physi-c
i a n s in the area and
Confederate is eight "miles
away.
"The outpatient department
at Confederate is both under-staffed
and overcrowded and
lengthy waits are the usual
rule. Efforts at self-medica-tion,
home remedies and
witchcraft are exhausted be-fore
the trip to the hospital is
begun," he explained.
There will be no charge
made for the clinic's services
but patients may make dona-tions
to offset costs of opera-tion
of the clinic.
